The valve is closed under spring pressure. When air pressure is introduced via the connected hydrant coupler, it activates the diaphragm and opens the valve. When air pressure is removed, the valve closes gradually to prevent pressure spikes.
Basic tools such as a torque wrench, seal pullers, and snap ring pliers are sufficient. The manual recommends inch-pound torque settings and outlines a full disassembly/reassembly procedure.
